A host of websites including LinkedIn, Zoom and Downdetector went offline on Friday morning after fresh problems at Cloudflare. Cloudflare said shortly after 9am UK time that it was “investigating issues with Cloudflare Dashboard and related APIs”, referring to application programming interfaces. A number of websites and platforms were down, including the Downdetector site used to monitor online service issues. Users reported problems with other websites including Zoom, LinkedIn, Shopify and Canva, although many are back online. Cloudflare provides network and security services for many online businesses to help their websites and applications operate.

The number of overseas nurses and midwives coming to the UK is collapsing, figures reveal, with rising racism and changes to immigration rules blamed for the fall. At the same time, more international staff are leaving Britain, according to workforce data published by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). NHS staff groups said the rising tide of hostility towards migrants and hardline government changes to immigration rules were behind the apparent shunning of the UK as a destination. Over the same period, the number of nurses arriving in the UK from the Philippines fell by 68%, from Nigeria by 28% and from Ghana by 9%. Despite these trends, the total number of nurses, midwives and nursing associates on the register has grown to 860,801, the highest number ever.

GPs are failing to provide adequate support for people living with frailty, an independent watchdog has found. Frailty is a syndrome related to ageing and in which body systems gradually lose their in-built reserves. Symptoms include exhaustion and people living with frailty are more likely to be housebound. GPs are required to identify any registered patient aged 65 or over who is living with frailty, but only one in six were assessed for the condition in 2024/25, according to a National Audit Office (NAO) report. GPs have said the failures are partly the result of their increasing workload and a shrinking workforce.

The UK’s new digital-only immigration system is creating stress, fear and exclusion for immigrants who rely on their status, a new report has found. This would make them the first migrants to experience a mandatory digital-only identification system. But, according to the study by Migrant Voice and the University of Warwick, the new system has caused people to experience high levels of stress while trying to digitalise their immigration status within tight deadlines. Employers, landlords, airline staff, and border officials often lacked understanding of digital immigration checks, leading to delays and confusion. Migrants with limited digital literacy, language barriers and disabilities are at high risk of becoming excluded from the process, the study said.

The United States Military has conducted another deadly strike on an alleged drug smuggling boat in the Caribbean, killing four, according to the Pentagon. But revelations over the September 2 strike have prompted renewed scrutiny and investigations from bipartisan committees in Congress. The White House has denied that Hegseth ordered the second strike on the vessel following an initial strike. Instead, they said the second strike that appeared to kill two survivors of the first, was ordered by Admiral Frank “Mitch” Bradley. The White House has said the second strike was still in compliance with the laws of armed conflict.

Asia-Pacific markets opened lower Friday following a subdued Wall Street session. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index lost 1.36%, while the Topix declined 1.12%. A United States appeals court has issued a stay on a lower court’s order requiring the administration of US President Donald Trump to withdraw the National Guard from Washington, DC, in the coming weeks. District judge Jia Cobb had ruled in November that the Trump administration must withdraw federal troops by December 11, later extending the deadline by 21 days. The Trump administration has deployed at least 2,000 National Guard troops – reservists who are not full-time soldiers – to Washington, DC, as part of what he has described as part of an anti-crime and beautification initiative. Thursday’s decision comes days after two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot while on duty just blocks from the White House. Authorities have charged 29-year-old Afghan Rahmanullah Lakanwal for the attack, after which the Trump administration pledged to send 500 more members of the National Guard to the city.

Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling is likely to fuel further attempts to redraw maps in favour of one party or another. Police say they have recovered a Fabergé egg pendant from a man accused of swallowing the item in a jewellery story. A photo supplied by police on Friday showed a gloved hand holding the recovered pendant, which was still attached to a long, gold chain with an intact price tag. The piece was a limited-edition, Fabergé egg pendant inspired by the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy. Central to the film’s plot is a jewel-smuggling operation that involves a fake Fabergé egg. “The egg opens to reveal an 18ct yellow gold octopus nestled inside, adorned with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes,” an item description said.

On a wet, lazy Sunday evening a baby fur seal waddled into a craft beer bar in Richmond, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Bar staff “did a great job keeping the seal safe” until rangers arrived, said DoC spokesperson Helen Otley. “They can turn up in unusual places, like this pub, but this is normal exploratory behaviour,” Otley said. Successful conservation programs in New Zealand have resulted in growing seal and sea lion populations, bringing them into closer contact with humans than before. Evans, who has owned the pub with her partner for just a few months, said the baby fur seal was the first patron she’s had to evict.

A man from a high-profile family has been found guilty of raping a woman inside his own home. Prosecutors said he digitally raped his friend’s girlfriend at his Melbourne home in the early hours of 14 January 2024. The jury was told the woman had consensual sex with her boyfriend at the house but then he organised an Uber and left the property shortly before 2am. The offender then lied, telling the woman her boyfriend would be returning upstairs because his Uber had been cancelled. Crown prosecutor Jeremy McWilliams told the jury the man had told a series of lies to try to deflect blame.

Heatwave warnings were also in place for parts of the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia on Friday, including an extreme heatwave warning in WA’s Pilbara region. In NSW, temperatures had reached 31C in the Sydney CBD and Richmond by 10am and 33C at Olympic Park. Extreme fire danger warnings were in place for areas including Sydney and the Hunter. How said high minimum temperatures were forecast in the greater Sydney region on Friday night, with temperatures unlikely to drop below 21C in the city and 23C in the west. James decries Trump’s ‘weaponisation’ of the justice system after second failed attempt to federally prosecute her. A federal grand jury has rejected prosecutors’ attempt to revive a criminal case against New York Attorney General Letitia James, after a judge previously threw out charges levelled against the prominent critic of United States President Donald Trump. In November, US District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie dismissed a mortgage fraud case against James after finding that the federal prosecutor who secured the indictment, Lindsey Halligan, was unlawfully appointed. “The grand jury’s refusal to re-indict Attorney General James is a decisive rejection of a case that should never have existed in the first place,” Lowell said in a statement. A New York state appeals court in August threw out the penalty but upheld the judge’s finding that Trump was liable for fraud.

US submarines carrying nuclear weapons could dock at Australian bases, defence officials have told the Senate, and the Australian government and people would not know. The US maintains a policy of “strategic ambiguity” around its nuclear deployment and it refuses to confirm or deny whether aircraft or seagoing vessels capable of carrying nuclear weapons are, in fact, carrying a nuclear warhead. “We respect the United States position of neither confirming nor denying,” the Australian defence department secretary, Greg Moriarty, told the Senate. But Australia maintains that a US submarine, potentially armed with nuclear weapons, is not prohibited from visiting an Australian port. “Stationing nuclear weapons in Australia is prohibited by the South Pacific nuclear free zone treaty, to which Australia remains committed.

Now, the Yorkshire market town of Skipton has been named “the happiest place to live” in Great Britain. It was named the best place to live in Britain by the Sunday Times in 2014, and in 2017 residents of the area that includes the town were named by the Office for National Statistics as the happiest in the country. (Hopefully the people of Skipton did not mind not being featured in the Guardian’s list of the happiest places to live in Britain published in May.) Thousands of residents across more than 200 areas of Great Britain told the website how they felt about where they lived. Skipton scored highly as a place where people felt “they can be themselves” and for its affordability.

More than 60,000 penguins in colonies off the coast of South Africa have starved to death as a result of disappearing sardines, a new paper has found. More than 95% of the African penguins in two of the most important breeding colonies, on Dassen Island and Robben Island, died between 2004 and 2012. Some everyday expressions have an obvious nautical origin such as “all at sea” and “an even keel”. But plenty of others have slipped into the language unnoticed, including a number derived from how sailors talked about the wind. Surprisingly, “overbearing” was originally a nautical term, meaning having an advantage over another ship by carrying more canvas safely and so being able to sail faster. “Veering”, from the French “virer”, meaning to turn, was first applied to the change in direction of the wind. “By and large” originally referred to a ship alternately sailing as close to the wind as possible, known as sailing “by the wind”, and sailing in the direction the wind is blowing in.

Meeting to boost ties comes as India seeks reprieve from US oil sanctions related to war in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have kicked off a daylong summit in the capital of India, where trade and Western sanctions over the war in Ukraine were set to loom large. Officials have said they want to increase trade with India to $100bn by 2030 — up from an already all-time high of $68bn in 2024. Fallout continues after Japanese prime minister said use of force against Taiwan would be 'survival threatening' for Japan. Japan and China have escalated their war of words at the United Nations following unprecedented remarks from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi about Tokyo’s role in a potential Taiwan conflict. Both times were in response to separate letters from China to the UN about Takaichi. The dispute began in November when Takaichi told Japanese legislators that should China ever use force against Taiwan, the move would constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, according to Japanese media. Taiwan and Japan do not have diplomatic relations, but they are close neighbours and unofficial allies.

Canberra says it seeks to make early contact with the new administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles will head to Japan on Saturday for talks with his Japanese counterpart, Shinjiro Koizumi, as the allies seek to advance bilateral defence cooperation amid growing tension in the Asia Pacific. An Australian government news release on Friday said Canberra is seeking to make early contact with the new administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, adding that Australia and Japan have a “shared vision for our region” amid “increasingly complex global challenges”. “I look forward to meeting with Minister Koizumi to progress our already strong defence relationship even further,” he added. While the final death toll of the massacre remains unclear, British MPs have been briefed that at least 60,000 have been murdered in El Fasher. Brian Cole, a 30-year-old man from Virginia, the United States, has been arrested for planting two pipe bombs in Washington, DC, during the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, the US Justice Department said on Thursday morning.
