The US supreme court agreed on Friday to decide the legality of Donald Trump’s order to heavily restrict the right to birthright citizenship in the United States. Trump then took to the supreme court to fight the injunctions. But it did not address the legality of the birthright citizenship ban itself. The lower court ruled that Trump’s policy violated the constitution’s 14th amendment and a federal law codifying birthright citizenship rights in a class-action lawsuit by parents and children whose citizenship is threatened by the directive. The 14th amendment has long been interpreted as guaranteeing citizenship for babies born in the United States.

A US citizen who was seen on home security video being chased by masked federal agents outside New Orleans amid the Trump administration’s sweeping immigration crackdown says she surmises that she was pursued because “I’m brown”. “I have no idea why they targeted me,” Jacelynn Guzman told Guardian reporting partner WWL Louisiana on Thursday, a day after the video in question was taken and subsequently went viral online. The statement, provided Friday, said agents ultimately determined Guzman “was not the target” and then departed the area without making arrests. The Trump administration told WWL that it had deployed immigration agents across New Orleans-area communities including Marrero as part of an operation focused on violent offenders illegally residing in the US. The US Department of Justice has moved to eliminate rules protecting LGBTQ+ people from sexual abuse in prisons, a shift advocates say is “reckless and dangerous” and will lead to increased assaults behind bars. A justice department memo issued on Tuesday said “effective immediately”, prisons and jails will no longer be held responsible for violations of standards meant to shield LGBTQ+ people from harassment, abuse and rape. The justice department is in the process of seeking formal updates to the rules, the memo said. Gregg’s memo was sent to Prea auditors, who review compliance with the law, directing the monitors to ignore LGBTQ+ protections in future audits. The justice department, Gregg said, is “currently updating” its Prea standards to align with the president’s order.

The Supreme Court rejected such a narrow definition in a landmark 1898 case. “Most obviously, it has impaired the United States’ territorial integrity by creating a strong incentive for illegal immigration,” Sauer said. Trump’s executive order had been due to come into effect on February 19, but it was halted after federal judges ruled against the administration in multiple lawsuits. Conservatives hold a 6-3 majority on the Supreme Court, and three of the justices were appointed by Trump.

At least 86 people have been killed in strikes on alleged drug trafficking boats that experts call illegal killings. Since early September, the United States has carried out at least 22 declared military strikes targeting alleged drug-trafficking vessels off the coast of Latin America. California has asked the judge to issue a preliminary injunction in order to return control of the remaining national guard troops in Los Angeles to the state, but Breyer did not immediately rule. “We cannot turn a blind eye to what happened in Los Angeles in June of this year,” he said. Trump’s call-up of the California national guard was the first time in decades that a state’s national guard was activated without a request from its governor and marked a significant escalation in the administration’s efforts to carry out its mass deportation policy. California sued, and Breyer issued a temporary restraining order that required the administration to return control of the guard troops to California. Other judges have blocked the administration from deploying national guard troops to Portland, Oregon, and Chicago.

Elon Musk's SpaceX, is initiating a secondary share sale that would give the company a valuation of up to $800 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday. SpaceX is also telling some investors it will consider going public possibly around the end of next year, the report said. At the elevated price, Musk's aerospace and defense contractor would be valued above ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which wrapped up a share sale at a $500 billion valuation in October. A SpaceX IPO would include its Starlink business, which the company previously considered spinning out. Musk recently discussed whether SpaceX would go public during Tesla 's annual shareholders meeting last month.

Zelenskyy, as well as European leaders backing him, have repeatedly accused Putin of stalling in peace talks while the Russian army tries to press forward with its invasion. Trump tapped Kushner again to pair up with Witkoff to try to find an endgame to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ushakov, who accompanied Putin on a visit to India on Friday, repeated the Russian president’s recent criticism of Europe’s stance on the peace talks.

The payout is the result of the wrongful death lawsuit Wilson’s family filed against the city in June, claiming the officer who shot the teen acted with “racial violence”. The New York Times sued an embattled artificial intelligence startup on Friday, accusing the firm of illegally copying millions of articles. The newspaper alleged Perplexity AI had distributed and displayed journalists’ work without permission en masse. The newspaper said that Perplexity’s business model relies on scraping and copying content, including paywalled material, to power its generative AI products. It has attracted a variety of big-name investors, including Nvidia and Jeff Bezos, as money has flooded the AI industry. San Francisco-based Perplexity AI also faced a lawsuit from the Rupert Murdoch-owned Dow Jones and the New York Post.
