The New York Times on Friday filed a lawsuit against Perplexity, alleging the artificial intelligence startup has illegally copied and distributed its copyrighted content. The startup also generates outputs that are "identical or substantially similar to" The Times' content, according to the complaint. A former doctor has been charged with carrying out sexual assaults against 38 people who were patients in his care. Nathaniel Spencer, from Birmingham, is accused of dozens of acts of sexual assault, some of them against children younger than 13, between 2017 and 2021. Spencer is due to appear at the North Staffordshire justice centre on 20 January. In its announcement late Thursday, Rubrik reported adjusted earnings of 10 cents per share, while analysts had expected a loss of 17 cents per share. The company boosted revenue guidance for the fiscal year to a range of $1.28 billion to $1.282 billion, up from a previous high of $1.237 billion.

Salesforce shares popped 5% on Friday after the company posted better-than-expected third quarter earnings on Wednesday despite falling short of Wall Street's revenue estimates. The stock, which is up 13% over the past five days, is aiming for its best week since 2023. The company reported an adjusted earnings per share of $3.25, topping Wall Street's estimates of $2.86 per share. Salesforce is hoping to convince Wall Street that AI will be able to bolster its products rather than replace them. Analysts highlighted Salesforce's AI platform Agentforce, which builds agents that automates business tasks and streamline workflow.
